We start all our days at 6am to give us ample time to rest and enjoy the sights. We have a cold
breakfast and hot dinner everyday. Lunch will be a series of energy snacks along the way while hiking.

Day 1 & 2  Mark will meet you at the airport holding a Talamanca Treks sign.  As a group we will make
our way to the trail head in San Gerardo using public transportation, eating at restaurants and
sleeping one night in a hotel.  On the second day we will arrive in San Gerado and make camp near the
trail head where we make final preparations.

Day 3- Our trip starts at about 1,100m in San Gerardo on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.  Our first day
of climbing through the National park takes us to 3000m where the park shelter is located.

Day 4- 2 more hours of uphill climbing will bring us to the summit of Chirripo at 3,820m.  We take some
pictures, have a snack, and place this day deep in our memories. This is where the wilderness begins.
We head west down the windswept continental divide, Fila Uran, with five hours of spectacular views of
Costa Rica and the glacial lakes of Chirripo.  We set up camp outside the national park at about 3,000m
just west of Cerro Uran.

Day 5- Descend along Paso de los Indios for 9 hours to the headwaters of the Chirripo Atlantico River
(1,400m). This trial takes us through the most remote mountains in Costa Rica where no one lives and
travelers are rare.  We will have the opportunity to see the wildlife from three different climactic zones
on this day, including the elegant Quetzal and the Danta, cousin to the Rhino.

Day 6- Rest at the base of Paso de Los Indios and bathe in the icy headwaters of the Chirripo River.
Cook bread for the upcoming days, clean gear and heal wounds.  Enjoy the purity of this very special
place in the middle of Costa Rica.

Day 7- We continue along the Chirripo River for 9 hours passing the remote Cabecar village of Sitio
Hilda.  We set up camp along the river at the mouth of Rio Cuen..

Day 8-  We head up and over the Moravia saddle going from the Chirripo Valley into the Pacuare
Valley.  Hiking for 6 hours.  Set up camp at a vista point on the Attiro ridge.

Day 9- Continue down the Attiro ridge to the Pacuare River for 1 hour.  Cross an old 80m hammock
bridge and bathe in the clear river.  Head over the Morado ridge to the Barreal stream for 2 hours.
Climb up the steep Barreal face for 30 minutes and spend the last 1 hour in the primary rain forest
reserve of San Agustin.  Rest those weary legs and enjoy the giant feast and a deep internal satisfaction
of something difficult done well.

Day 10-  It just keeps getting better.  Horseback ride 10.2km to the nearest bus in Jicotea.  Bus to San
Jose.

Special Notes:
This is a physically demanding trip which will test your endurance.  You need to carry your share of
equipment.  You need to be in decent physical shape.  You do not need to be an expert in wilderness
backpacking.  Our trip leaders will teach you any techniques necessary for you to become a valuable
member to the team.

Do to the nature of the terrain and the dangers of flash floods in river valleys and icy wind storms at
higher altitudes all backpackers are expected to be lively on their feet and in a sober state of mind in
times of pressure.

Our trips are not lead in the typical manner of guided trips.  We go as a team, and it can only work as a
team effort.  Everyone carries their share of the weight and performs their share of camp duties.  We all
work together in keeping group moral if the going gets tough.
